Teaming up with UK online centres, Learning Pool has created a free e-learning module on becoming a digital champion.

An online learning community for people in the public sector, Learning Pool already provides low cost training modules for social enterprises, community and voluntary groups, small charities and anyone involved in civil society through My Learning Pool.  Learning Pool courses have helped more than 300,000 people improve their skills, which since 2007, has saved the public purse more than £36M.

dopting the adage ‘trusted faces in trusted places’, Mecca Bingo is bringing the net to the people, having appointed digital champions in every one of its 100 bingo clubs across the UK.

Jobcentre Plus

Department for Work and Pensions, executive agency Jobcentre Plus, central to the delivery of the department’s pledge for a move towards ‘digital by default’ via Universal Credits, is also backing Race Online 2012’s key Digital Champion and low-cost kit programmes.

The agency has recruited 820 Digital Champions, one in every Jobcentre in the UK, signposting jobseekers to local IT training centres, such as UKO and libraries, to increase their employability. The champions are also flagging up Race Online 2012’s low-cost recycled computer schemes to clients.

Discovering ancestors with Cornwall Library Service

Cornwall Library Service has held a series of fun and friendly sessions to inspire and support off-liners.

Family history sessions in Helston, Fowey, St Austell and Saltash and Camborne libraries have helped encourage internet beginners to go online to uncover more about their relatives, making it really easy for them to find out if they’re connected to kings, related to bakers or have a ‘black sheep’ in the family.  So far, 10 learners have discovered an amazing 115 new additions to their family trees.  The sessions have also encouraged learners to discover more about what they can do on the

The Open University

The Open University (OU) officially partnered with Race Online 2012 in February 2011 and since then, has made every effort to raise the profile of the campaign and to inspire digital champions.

In May/June 2011 the University launched a competition on its community website, ‘The Platform’, which asked entrants to comment on what they are doing and planning to do to help someone online; to vote in their poll to say “yes, I want to be a digital champion”; to join Race Online 2012 on Platform; and to join the digital champion network. Age UK Devon

With the number of over 50s in Devon set to rise by 14.5{a5b7970aed6bc6c43cc2e7d6e3c429d137483f4158e62a10a211b4ee5d30f265} (over 358,000) by 2016, it’s imperative that older people are supported to gain the necessary skills to benefit from the internet.

 

The largest independent charity in the county, Age UK Devon, is working independently to support older people and is a great example of a charity that’s helping people shop, find important health information and keep in touch with family and friends online, whatever their age. NHS Choices

With more than 100 million visits a year, NHS Choices is empowering and supporting people to better access health info and manage their healthcare online.

 

Saving the NHS an estimated £44m a year, if more people managed their health online, this could jump to between £2bn and £5bn.

Through regularly featuring web-banners on its homepage and in stories in its newsletters (which go out to 130,000 people every month!), NHS Choices has been promoting the health benefits of being online and asking Choices users to become digital champions. BBC First Click Friends

The BBC reaches 97{a5b7970aed6bc6c43cc2e7d6e3c429d137483f4158e62a10a211b4ee5d30f265} of the UK population every week and its First Click campaign, launched last autumn to inspire over 55′s who have never been online to give it a go, has already helped over 100,000 people go online for the first time!

Marks and Spencer

Marks and Spencer fully support the goals of Race Online 2012 and is on track to help engage and support its customers, staff, and stakeholders to take full advantage of the benefits of the net.

 

So far, all 75,000 M&S staff have been offered the opportunity to use their paid volunteer day to assist charities supporting older and socially disadvantaged individuals with online training. Current updates to the M&S Plan A website will also include details of the Race Online 2012 campaign to encourage and engage M&S customers to get involved and help pass on their IT skills.
